Rashaad Newsome is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends several practices, including collage, sculpture, film, photography, music, computer programming, software engineering, and performance. Using the diasporic traditions of improvisation and collage, he pulls from the world of advertising, the Internet, and Black and Queer culture to produce counter-hegemonic work that draws connections between social practice, abstraction, and popular culture. Black Magic, presented in 2019 by New York Live Arts, Philadelphia Photo Arts, and Icebox Project Space, is a multifaceted project that includes images, site- specific installation, and performance. Utilizing his characteristic collage-based practice, this poster is a holistic reflection on agency, Blackness, and the futurity of intersectional identities and oppression.
 
Rashaad Newsome was born in 1979 in New Orleans, LA. He received a BFA in Art History from Tulane University (2001). He has exhibited and performed in numerous museums, institutions, and festivals, including The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, NY; The National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, DC; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France. Newsome’s work can be found in numerous public collections, including The Studio Museum in Harlem, Whitney Museum of American Art, The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. He currently lives and works between San Francisco, CA and New York City, NY.
