Pat Steir
Untitled, 2016
Digital Print
24 x 18 inches
Edition of 50
In celebration of the first anniversary of free admission to the general public, the CAC released a limited-edition portfolio of prints from three pioneering female artists who had exhibited in the museum. This portfolio included painter and printmaker Pat Steir. Known for her abstract, dripped, splashed, and poured works, Untitled mimics the artist’s iconic “waterfall” paintings. These poured pieces focus on the interplay between the media, the artist’s body, and gravity, allowing chance to play a primary role in creating the work.
Pat Steir was born in 1938 in Newark, NJ. She received her BFA from the Pratt Institute (1962). She has been the subject of various solo exhibitions, including at Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, TX (1983); Musée d'art et d'Histoire, Geneva, Switzerland (1989); The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland, NY (1996); Newcomb Art Gallery, Tulane University, New Orleans, LA (2013); and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC (2019). Steir has also participated in many group exhibitions, including New Drawings, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH (1985); New Additions: Prints For An American Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2004); Modern Lab: The Found Alphabet, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (2011); and Drawing Dialogues: Selections from the Sol LeWitt Collection, Drawing Center, New York, NY (2016). Steir currently lives and works in New York, NY.
